Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It mostly comes down to weight capacity and how narrow your stairs are. The SL300 is rated for riders up to 300 pounds and folds to 11 inches from the wall. The SL600 carries up to 350 pounds, folds to 10.5 inches, and takes a rail up to 70 feet long. For riders above 350 pounds, the SL600 HD heavy-duty lift carries up to 600 pounds.

Usually not. Most straight stair lift rails are fastened to a few of the steps with brackets, not to the wall. Harmar also designs its rail to stand clear of the wall, so the chair does not scuff it as it travels.

Price depends on the model, the features you choose, and the type of staircase. Straight stair lifts are usually the least expensive type, because the rail is a simple straight run. Extras such as an automatic folding rail or a key lock add to the cost, and batteries need replacing every so often over the life of the lift.

A new stair lift can last around ten years. Harmar builds the SL300 and SL600 with a drive that needs no grease, and says their batteries typically need replacing every one to two years depending on use. If you move later, a straight lift can often go with you: our reinstallation service can set it up in your new home, or stair lift removal can take it out of the old one.

Straight stair lifts generally go in quickly, because the rail is one straight run with no custom bends. A staircase with a landing takes a lift on each flight. The exact timing depends on your staircase and the model chosen.
